Failure is not final, failure is not fatal Don Shula became the most successful coach in national football history with 325 wins. He said in his book, Everyone’s a Coach, ‘The biggest problem with most leaders of today is they don't stand for anything. Leadership implies movement toward something and convictions provide that direction. If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything.’ Probably his most favourite and pointed statement is, ‘Success is not forever, and failure is never final.’ Friend, failure is not the end. I know, because I have failed. I have failed in areas of my life that became very public, but that was not the end. I lost my sense of dignity for a while, but that failure was not fatal. I bounced back! I have discovered that understanding failure is the greatest tool that one can have to resurrect and rebuild. Failure is not fatal and failure is not final. Therefore, failure should never kill your dreams; failure should never kill your goals. Instead, it should be something that causes you to rise up and shout, ‘I am not going to die on this mountain!’ During a challenging time in my life, a friend rang me at 2.30 in the morning. He was unaware of the challenges I was facing, but he had had a dream and wanted to share it with me. In the dream, my friend and I were in a fishing boat and I was shot in the head. Now that may sound a bit dramatic, but there was a point to that dream. Over the phone my friend told me, ‘Pat, whatever is happening to you right now, I am here to tell you that the wound is not fatal.’ You need to know that your wounds are not fatal either. They are only fatal if you let your wounds kill you. The founder of KFC, Colonel Sanders, failed in his attempt to establish a great franchise, but he did not let it kill him. Inventor of the light bulb, Thomas Edison, failed in many of his experiments. But the great men and women of history never let failure be fatal - instead, they made it a springboard to success. Challenge Ask yourself what you can learn from your failures. What amends do you have to make to rectify the problems? What strategies will you implement to ensure this failure does not happen again? Who will you surround yourself with to inspire you to rise above your failure? Author Alan Redpath once said, 'You will never lighten the load for others until you first feel the pressure in your own soul.’ You will never be able to lighten the load of other people's failures until you have failed yourself. It is amazing to me now how most people find me very approachable to talk about their fears, their failures and how to overcome them. As a result of your own failures, try to become that kind of person.
